Miscellaneous Resources
Miscellaneous Tagged Miscellaneous No Comments »Jessica Schlosser from Laurelhurst asked about some specific topics that her students said they would like to learn about. I thought I’d post my reply.

I would recommend showing 6-8 graders how to set up RSS feeds in Google Reader in an appropriate context. For example, if you had small groups create blogs for a project and then had each group subscribe to everyone else’s blogs and provide feedback via comments, which can also be set up in an RSS feed. I think that could be valuable, especially with writing.
I will compile all the topics you listed for possible PD. Here are some related resources:

Scratch is a new programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art — and share your creations on the web. Scratch is designed to help young people (ages 8 and up) develop 21st century learning skills. As they create and share Scratch projects, young people learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. It’s free!

The 21st Century Educator: Creating a Personal Learning Network
http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ajb789gvf6sk_147gbn5s3gx
What is a personal learning network?
“…Personal learning networks are created by an individual learner, specific to the learner’s needs extending relevant learning connections to like-interested people around the globe. PLNs provide individuals with learning and access to leaders and experts around the world bringing together communities, resources and information impossible to access solely from within school walls.”
http://theinnovativeeducator.blogspot.com/2008/04/5-things-you-can-do-to-begin-developing.html
“A personal or professional learning network involves an individual’s topic-oriented goal, a set of practices and techniques aimed at attracting and organizing a variety of relevant content sources selected for their value, to help the owner accomplish a professional goal or interest.”
David Warlick
Teachers can use personal learning networks to start exploring some of the tools that so many of their students are already using.
